Steps to Minimize Bruising from Cosmetic Procedures
1. Icing. Icing the treatment area(s) as directed the evening after the procedure can help minimize bruising.
2. Avoid Blood Thinners. Avoid substances that reduce blood clotting for 10 days prior to procedure and 3 days after the procedure such as:
- Aspirin (Excedrin)
- Vitamin E
- Fish oil
- St. John’s Wort
- Coumadin (warfarin)
- Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as, ibuprofen (Advil)
3. Anti-Bruising Supplements. Bromelain (oral) and Arnica (sub-lingual) tablets 2 days prior to the procedure and continue for 1 week after procedure. Arnica also comes in a topical gel formulation which could be used immediately after the procedure. All products are over-the-counter or dispensed by physician offices.
4. Light-Emitting Diode Devices. Light-emitting diode (LED) devices with red light and infrared waves can improve bruising. You can purchase an at-home LED device from a variety of manufacturer's, including Lightstim and Baby Quasar.
